This workshop is designed to help you understand and confidently navigate the German academic system.

Gain practical insights into how academia in Germany works:

  • Learn the unwritten rules and expectations of German academic culture
  • Discover how to communicate effectively with supervisors, colleagues, and university administration
  • Clarify roles, responsibilities, and norms of professional conduct in research environments
  • Understand how culture shock can affect your academic experience - and how to manage it successfully

Whether you’re new to Germany or looking to strengthen your intercultural competence, this workshop will equip you with strategies to thrive in the German research and university landscape.

Bedingung für Teilnahme: 

Uninterrupted participation and having the camera on, if possible, are much appreciated. Active participation through interaction during the course are also appreciated.

Please be aware of the booking and unbooking periods. After successful registration, if you do not attend, without prior or subsequent notification from you explaining/excusing your absence, our cancellation policy will come into effect. This means that you cannot book any of our workshops for the next 6 weeks and we will deduct 250 € from your travel grant funds.

Dr. Umilaela Arifin moved to Germany over a decade ago, facing challenges as a female researcher adapting to a new culture and academic system. Since then, she has established herself as an international scientist with numerous publications, grants, and collaborations. She holds a PhD in Biology from the University of Hamburg and completed a Marie Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Hamburg and the University of California, Berkeley. She is now focusing on training and mentoring early career researchers through Scienza. With over 15 years of global research experience, she actively promotes diversity in science and is the founder of the Global Women in Herpetology Project.
